What are windshield wipers, why are they important to my vehicle, and what should I be aware of?

Windshield wipers are a critical safety system on your vehicle designed to maintain a clear view of the road by removing rain, snow, dirt, and other debris from the windshield. They are composed of metal or plastic arms that drag a flexible rubber or silicone blade across the glass.

Importance to Your Vehicle

Windshield wipers are a primary safety feature because clear visibility is essential for safe driving, especially in adverse weather conditions. The Federal Highway Administration notes that a significant percentage of weather-related crashes occur on wet pavement or during rainfall, making functioning wipers vital for accident prevention.

Beyond safety, proper use and maintenance of wipers help prolong the life of your windshield itself. Worn-out blades can expose metal or hard plastic parts that can scratch, chip, or damage the glass, leading to costly repairs or a full windshield replacement.

What You Should Be Aware Of

Signs of Wear and Tear

You should regularly inspect your windshield wipers for the following signs that indicate they need replacement:

· Streaking or smearing across the windshield.

· Skipping or chattering  (bouncing) when the wipers are in use.

· Squeaking noises during operation, even on a wet windshield.

· Visible cracks, tears, or missing pieces on the rubber blades.

· Reduced effectiveness, where large patches of the windshield are left untouched during a pass.

Maintenance Tips

· Regular cleaning: Use a soft cloth with warm, soapy water or rubbing alcohol to clean the rubber blades and the windshield, removing dirt, oil, and road grime.

· Avoid dry wiping: Always use windshield washer fluid or water before running your wipers on a dry or dusty windshield to prevent damage to the blades and the glass.

· Protect from elements: In winter, do not lift the wiper arms from the windshield to prevent them from freezing to the glass as this can permanently deform the internal springs, thus greatly diminishing the pressure needed for the wipers to clean the windshield. In freezing conditions, use a winter windshield cover or plastic bags to cover the wiper blades. In extreme heat, parking in the shade can reduce UV damage and prolong the blades' life.

· Check washer fluid: Ensure the washer fluid reservoir is always topped up, using a winter-specific fluid in colder months to prevent freezing.
